As I write this, I’m sitting in the business class lounge at Istanbul airport. It would appear that the weather gods are not going to let us go easily – we woke on our last day in Kazakhstan to temperatures of -35F. I paid $100 for Liz and I to use the VIP lounge at Atyrau airport, as I had been warned that the temporary shelter that they have put up in lieu of a departure lounge isn’t heated.

We’re back from our odd-year vacation with George and Cathy (and Alex and Lucy). We got to sail out of a new Moorings base in Canouan, St.Vincent and the Grenadines. Aside from raining half the time, luggage getting lost, boat having to be replaced, storms at sea, and finally, stolen camera, we still had a great time! We went to some bays that we had visited before, and even met a boat-boy named Sydney Dallas, who we had first met in Tobago Cays in 1991. While he didn’t remember us, he was amazed and flattered that we still had the hand-painted tee shirts that we bought from him during that trip. Needless to say, there won’t be any pictures of this trip on the gallery. At the end of the trip, we tacked on 5 days in a little shore-front villa in Vequies, a small island south of Puerto Rico. This is a place that until a few years ago was used by the military as a bombing practice area. After tons of protests and years of cleanup by the US government, about 70% of the island has been declaired a nature reserve. They have miles of beaches, beautiful reefs, and some pretty cool back country. One of the most memorable experiences from the trip was a night-time swim in a small enclosed bay that is home to tiny bio-luminescent organisms. Every stoke brings a glow of green around your arms and fingers. Diving with a mask is like being in another world. Amazing.

I’m working to get up descriptions and pictures of our trip to Turkey in August (again!) and our home trip in October. Both were great fun. For now, here are pictures of the Turkey trip. It’s hard to believe that all of that happened in only 10 days.

Okay, I know that I’ve occasionally been prone to using gadgets. Some might even say that it is an obsession. Medication might be called for. But hey, toys are one of the things that makes all the waiting in airport lounges and other various places in the world where waiting might be called for, livable. Paperbacks are for wimps.

As the snow comes down outside, I’m remembering all the birthday celebrations in the past two months. Of course, the most important, was my Dad’s 80th, which we celebrated in early October. It was the first time in way too long that the whole family had gotten together, including Kevin, who has just returned, safe and sound, from Iraq. Pictures are in the photo gallery at http://www.sailor.nu/cpg132/. Also in November was my birthday, and Liz’s. We managed to surprise her for the second year in a row, with lots of friends from here in Kazakhstan. After being surprised with a visit to Arkansas by our good friend Jeannine, as well as a surprise of a new ring in Key West, Liz is getting a little weary of people jumping out at her from around corners and such. Also on our home trip we got to go to Las Vegas to see our good friends Thom and Ant, as well as Key West, to see, well, just about everyone we know from California (if that makes any sense). I’ll try to get some of those pictures up, real soon.
