As a group, we have wanted to go to Croatia for over twenty years. We first heard about it when we were living in England. Back then, it was called Yugoslavia, and sailing there seemed like the next logical step after exploring Greece and Turkey. The 1991 war for separation put an end to all that. It was five years before the country would be at peace, and many more before the tourist industry returned. We settled for making sure that we had thoroughly searched the Caribbean for the best rum punches and conch salad.

As if buying a house in Mexico wasn’t enough for this month, we are finishing a week with our good friends George and Cathy in Hammond, LA. The big event was the New Orleans Jazz and Heratage Festival, otherwise known as Jazz Fest.

It’s hard to classify Thailand – ancient culture, friendly people, and a 7-11 on every corner. Long sandy beaches, green hills, fruit falling from the trees. Mopeds carrying a family of 5, or a 15 foot ladder. Every other shop is either a massage parlor, a tailor, or a restaurant specializing in spaghetti bolonese.

I’m sitting in the last row of the plane, window seat. The only way to get farther back in the plane is if I went to the toilet, which is conveniently placed directly behind my head. It’s good to hear that everyone is kindly flushing when they are finished. Of course, getting there might be a problem.

Ahhh, the land of milk and honey, of sunshine, beautiful beaches... Well, we made it to California. After sitting on the ground in Istanbul for 3 hours waiting for de-ice we finally found our way to London. Of course, by that time our onward flight had left, so we were re-routed via Los Angeles and finally to San Francisco. Still plenty of time to get some sleep and make my Friday morning appointment with the medical department for a Yellow Fever shot. Funny how it all feels the same as it did when we left 3 years ago. It seems little has changed. Of course, the occasional new apartment building is there, along with more housing tracts (just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be space for more), but generally things are as we left them. Ensuring that our priorities are in order, a new car has been purchased (a 2006 Miata – zoom zoom!), along with order of services for our house, phones, etc. Tuesday we get back into the house and start making it livable. Sunday I’m off to the new job.
